Two hundred and twenty-five Japanese from Bainbridge Island were removed by the army in the first evacuation of civilians in Pacific Northwest history.
Finishing touches were added to the Puyallup Assembly Center, and it was now ready to received Japanese evacuees. The Army Corps of Engineers finished the work in just 17 days and at half of the budgeted amount.
Visitors will see the foundation of a barracks, the remnants of ornamental rock gardens, the stone sentry building and the last major structure, the wood-frame auditorium.
