Black and White Negative Mother and Child Erminie Madison Honda, holding her son, James, in the Honda dining room, circa 1936. This photo was taken in May for a Catholic celebration in which children create a small altar out of paper-mache to honor the Blessed Virgin. Erminie, of Swedish and Native Alaskan descent, married Seita Paul Honda, an exporter of timber to Japan, in 1919. They were one of the early mixed race families in Seattle. Additional info (also have scans of Honda family photos): The Honda family lived in this home on 16th Ave. and Spring St. in Seattle's Central District. On December 7, 1941, Seita was picked up by the FBI and incarcerated at Fort Missoula, Montana, classified as an enemy alien. His release in 1942 was sponsored by a well-known benefactor, Mrs. Claussen. Because of Executive Order 9066 and the financial collapse it brought to the family, their home on 16th Ave. was never recovered.
