Taiyo was started by Bansan Okada (back row, far right), to occupy children through activities such as sports, Japanese language studies, and travel to Japan. Front row: From left, Lily Yorozu, Hannah Ikeda, unidentified, Mrs. Morishita (also known as Ishiko or Ishi-chan Hamada), Sumio Arima, Luriko Okada, Gloria Hirabayashi. Second row: Far left, Akira Mayeda. Fifth from left, Ruth Hayasaka, Aiko Matsuda Okamoto, Sueno Hikida, Betty Nakamura, Ban Okada. Sumio Arima (front row, third right) was the city editor at Hokubei Jiji/North American Times. Mr. Arima was also a columnist using another name. His older brother, Sumiyoshi , was the editor who attended most of the community events, and his father (James' grandfather) Sumikiyo was the publisher. Sumio became the sole owner, publisher, and editor in October 1941 -- history quickly changed his life and titles. Info from James Arima.
