Description

Large granite stone mortar used for pounding mochi. Steamed "sweet rice" or mochigome is pounded and made into sheets and cut to squares or made into round mounds. Because of its sticky and tough texture mochi is regarded as a symbol of strength or toughness. Used by the Sagamiya Confectionary Company to make mochi. After closure mortar left in garden.
