Lidded Bowl

A: Brown glazed pottery bowl in shape of Japanese old fashioned "Kama" style (kama is a kitchen utensil used to cook rice over the wood or charcoal burning range). Inside is completely glazed in brown except around the upper rim while on outside it is glazed only above the ridge. The bottom and below the ridge ar left unglazed. The purpose of the ridge is to support the kama over a range. Front and back have inscriptions: Hagino-ya and Yokogawa-eki (Yokogawa station). Hagino-ya is probably the name of the catering outfit. The bowl was used to sell lunch at Yokogawa station on Shenetsu line of Japanese railroad system. Lunch sold in this type of bowl is called Kama Meshi cooked rice on the bottom topped with seasonal cuisine. B: Lid to A made of ceramic unglazed. Flat lid has two parallel ridges inscription in the center between two ridges reads: Yokogawa-iki (station) Ogino-ya.
