Rain Hat

Title

Rain Hat

Description

Straw Rain Hat in the Shape of a Hood. Made from bundles of straw which are alined vertically and held in place with a twined fiber cord at intervals. The side sections curve over the top and the straw bundles are covered on the outside with black cotton strips. Black cotton strips are also twisted along the bottom of the hood so that their ends are left free and create a decorative fringe. The twined fiber at the top of the hood ends in a loop. The edge of the hood is finished with a straw braid. These hats were worn by women working in the fields to protect them from rain.
