Sarong

Title

Sarong

Description

Javanese cotton batik sarong with bird and flower motif. Machine woven plain weave cotton beige colored with brown rust dark blue and light blue dyes. The fabric has been folded in half and machine stitched along one side to form a tube skirt. The cloth was mended with several patches before dying. Both the top and bottom edges feature a border approximately 1/4" tall with rust colored parallel vertical lines. Along the top is a rust colored horizontal border with flower tendrils and leaves. The main body of the fabric features several different designs. A large blue ground approximately 24" wide is near the stitched seam on one side. It shows to birds flying above a large floral design. The rest of the fabric ground is off-white (beige colored) and features a number of floral motifs birds and butterflies. Large areas of dark and spotted beige staining indicate that there may have been a problem with the wax resist during the dying process. An oval stamp of black ink near the seam is illegible for the most part but appears to indicate the city where the fabric was made.
