The Equal Rights Amendment was a US Constitutional amendment proposed by the 92nd US congress to the States for ratification after first passing the House on October 12 1977 then the Senate on March 22 1972. After being introduced into every Congressional session between 1923 and 1970 the amendment was passed to ensure as Section 1 of the amendment reads "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." The Amendment had seven years to be ratified by at least 38 states. Only 35 ratified and of those 5 rescinded their ratification before the1979 deadline.
