Description

Mikio Tajima grew up in Japan during World War II. In college, he decided to come to the United States to study, but the foreign student adviser who wrote his exchange student letter made a typo and Mikio ended up spending his first night in the US in the Seattle INS Building. His sponsor released him and Mikio attended College of the Pacific in California, where during the summers he worked at a hotel near Lake Tahoe. He then attended Columbia University to get his masters. There, he joined a UN internship program. He was an employee there for 33 years where he participated in trade negotiation and grassroots organizations. Although no longer at the UN, Mikio still participates in grassroots movements, in Sri Lanka for example.
