Shawl

Title

Shawl

Description

One textile length of shawl-like dimensions of silk with multi-colored geometrical patterns. The main body of the garment has varied stepped zig-zag and diamond motifs in magenta orange pale green hot pink blue and white-all shot with hot pink in the warp (vertical threads). At each end is a border 19" and 21.5" long filled width-wise with rows of stepped motifs in the same colors. Also running along the warp are yellow pencil stripes 1/4" apart. The blending of the weft (horizontal threads) colors with hot pink in the warp imparts subtle modulation called "shot" to the vibrant hues of the silk. Hand-made. Weaving dates to c. 200 BC in the Philippines. Few small green stains. Donor's father collected a number of textiles white stationed in the Philippines as an Army office c. 1900-1917.
