Shawl

Title

Shawl

Description

One textile length of silk of shawl-like dimensions with multi-colored geometrical designs. The main body of the garment is divided horizontally into sections each filled with continuous designs of variations of stepped diamond motifs and zig-zags in purple yellow hot pink burgundy white blue orange and green. At each end is a border divided cross-wise into several narrow strips with similar continuous designs in the same colors. One border is 6.75" wide and the other 7.75" wide. Hot pink is the warp (vertical threads). This when blended with the various colors of the weft (horizontal threads) produces a subtle modulation called "shot" to the vibrant hue of the silk. Hand-made. Weaving dates to c. 200 BC in the Philippines. Few very small holes especially on and near right-hand border. Donor's father collected a number of textiles while stationed in the Philippines as an Army officer c. 1900-1917.
