Description

"Onna Daruma" Doll Oval shaped solid doll wrapped in silk brocade with a white background having chrysanthemum flowers in blue red jade and pink stems and foliage in gold thread. An "obi" of gold and red metallic fabric is tied in a bow in the front. It has an under kimono of silver metallic fabric under which other under kimonos of white and red silk crepe. The doll's face is of "gofun" (a paste made of ground shell) with painted lips and inset eyes. It has dark hair of synthetic fiber. In "The Image and the Motif - Japanese Dolls" by Lea Baten it states that this type of doll is also known as "Hime" or "Princess Daruma" a play on the name Ehime the prefecture where Matsuyama city is located. Label on bottom of doll indicates it is from Matsuyama.
