Description

Men's Hanten type jacket in satin woven cotton in apple green. The lower part of the jacket has stenciled circular design and horizontal stripes in dark green van Dyke brown and black outlined with metallic gold which has mostly flaked off. The designs appear to be painted on the surface. The yoke is appliqued with painted bird feather designs in blue orange and green on yellow background. Edged with metallic outlines which are mostly gone and dark brown lines remain. The bird tail design in black rests on the center of hanten back. The sleeves are short and rounded at lower corners. The collar is wide which requires to be folded in half to wear. Two loops are attached at front near waist. It is lined with yellow muslin cotton on upper part and the outside green fabric is folded to meet the yellow lining. The sleeve openings are padded in cotton. Hanten is outer clothing for craftsmen laborers firemen. This particular hanten was used as a theatrical costume showing status of a player. It was used at Nippon Kan theather and among the Japanese American community. Both outside and inside the hanten have stains and have faded.
